SOUTHBANK CENTRE

London Sinfonietta

Resident at Southbank Centre

One of the world’s pre-eminent contemporary music groups, the London Sinfonietta’s 2008/09 season opens with a portrait of Thomas Larcher, the Austrian composer who writes so compellingly of the post-modern times we now live in. This is followed by an autumn focus on the work of a pair of towering fi gures of the European avant-garde - Gérard Grisey and Karlheinz Stockhausen - conducted by two of the world’s leading composer-conductors, Southbank Centre Associate Artists George Benjamin and Oliver Knussen.

In December, the London Sinfonietta celebrates its first 40 years, and during the second part of the season, the ensemble places the future of new music under the microscope. Look out for work by emerging voices from the Arab world, plus new work by British composers from Sir Peter Maxwell Davies to Tansy Davies, and the inspiring inventiveness of Heiner Goebbels in a unique joint project with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment.
