Amongst the audience at an 1827 Paris performance of Shakespeare's Hamletwas the young Hector Berlioz - an artist of volatile romantic temperament desperate for extra-musical inspiration. Not prone to understatement, Berlioz recorded the 'thunderbolt' he felt on seeing Shakespeare for the first time, glimpsing 'at a stroke the whole heaven of art'. He fell madly, too, for the Ophelia of Irish actress Harriet Smithson, returning to the Odeon theatre to indulge his fascination, and finding the inspiration for his yearning, proud and high-spirited Symphonie fantastique.
