Tchaikovsky at last achieved calm and solace in the late 1880s, freed in part from the catalogue of personal upheavals and catastrophes that were besetting his private life and carving a tragic path through his works. In the Fifth Symphony of 1888 Tchaikovsky finds at least some comfort and warmth; into its typically languorous and moving orchestral shadows are thrown dazzling shafts of bright optimism - perhaps Tchaikovsky’s final bid for happiness, his most telling struggle to embrace confidence and joy.
