Dvorak and Rachmaninov shared an enchanting ability to evoke the cultural contours of their respective countries in orchestral
music. But they also both left
those countries for the United States, writing music in the new world that, though charged
with a new confidence, revealed a still small voice of loneliness - touching thirst for the nourishing creative waters of
home. Russian folk themes pervade Rachmaninov's Third Symphony, outlining a longed-for landscape, and exposing a tangible
sense of sadness in the face of exile.
Royal Festival Hall at 6pm: A performance by the London
Philharmonic Orchestra's horn section. Admission free.
