The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra performs two of the world's most popular symphonic works. Mozart's last three symphonies were completed within a six week period in the summer of 1788. This is a staggering achievement, given not only the undisputed mastery of each work but also the fact that each is a unique statement with its own distinct sound-world and expressive mood. The C major symphony is the grandest of the trilogy, its Olympian power and great fugal finale earning it the nickname Jupiter.

Beethoven's last completed symphony is in every sense a revolutionary work, characterised by an intensity of emotional expression and overpowering energy. The unfolding drama of the first three movements culminates in the celebrated finale - the Ode to Joy - in which vocal soloists and choir sing Beethoven's heartfelt and unforgettable plea for universal love.
