Copland's 1944 ballet Appalachian Spring portrays the preparations for a wedding in a Pennsylvanian farming community,
and consists of a number of solo and ensemble dances for bride, groom, preacher and wedding guests. The score incorporates
a number of lively fiddle tunes and other folk-related material, although Copland has only borrowed one melody - the popular
Shaker tune 'Simple Gifts'.
A very different side of America is presented by Gershwin's jazz-inspired
Rhapsody in Blue, which is given distinctive treatment here by the dynamic Labeque sisters. Leonard Slatkin concludes the
concert with his own adaptation of Pictures at an Exhibition, in which he has slightly adjusted Ravel's orchestrations
to bring them closer to the spirit of Mussorgsky's original piano pieces.
