SOUTHBANK CENTRE

Shell Classic International 2007/08

This year’s Shell Classic International features the world’s finest orchestras. Riccardo Muti opens the season with two concerts with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and later the same month John Eliot Gardiner leads two evenings with his Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique and the Monteverdi Choir. This year the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and Mariss Jansons begin a four-year relationship with Southbank Centre, starting in November 2007. Other visitors to the Series include the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra with Daniele Gatti, Chamber Orchestra of Europe with Mitsuko Uchida, Basel Chamber Orchestra with Paul McCreesh and Angelika Kirchschlager, Zurich Opera with a concert performance of Strauss' Der Rosenkavalier under the baton of Franz Welser-Möst, and the fiery Iván Fischer with his Budapest Festival Orchestra.

Hear Ivan Fischer talking to Marshall Marcus, Southbank Centre's Head of Music, about what makes the Budapest Festival Orchestra such a lively and distinctive ensemble.
