One of the most electrifyingly dramatic moments in all opera occurs in Donizetti's Parisina, as the heroine's husband has his worst suspicions confirmed, and Parisina lets slip her love for another under the silky sedation of sleep. Azzo's fury explodes, and with it, the orchestra: driving strings swirl up over a striding bass, as Donizetti unleashes 'a dramatic energy unequalled by anything he composed up to this time' according to biographer William Ashbrook. Amongst the composer's 70 operas, this expressive psychological piece was the one that Donizetti himself favoured most - quite an endorsement.

The London Philharmonic Orchestra would like to thank the John S Cohen Foundation for its longstanding support of the Orchestra's collaboration with Opera Rara.
