Of the many Rossini operas to have been long neglected in favour of the 'old chestnuts', Ermione has proved the most rewarding in its recent revivals. This concise azione tragica is full of surprises: its choral overture, its proliferation of tenors, and even the un-Rossinian seriousness of its ancient Greek subject matter. But Rossini's power as a composer is stamped through its gripping ensembles, infectious choruses, and the tour de force soprano role of Ermione herself. Rossini wrote much on a whim, but this piece was, as he confided to a biographer, for posterity.

Please note 7pm start time.

Royal Festival Hall at 6pm: Opera Rara takes a fresh look at Rossini's lesser known opera Ermione.
