Concrete, a new cafe and  bar has opened at The Hayward. Situated at the front of the gallery, it is a welcoming cafe serving light refreshments and lunch during the day, and in the evening, it turns into a late-night bar serving a variety of specialist beers, wines and vodkas.

The cafe offers a changing menu throughout the day, which includes a sweet bakery selection, featuring chocolate and goji berry brownies, tarts and frittatas, healthy salads of sprouts, shoots and seeds, hot pots, and cheese and chutney toasties. Coffee is supplied by Union Hand Roasted in London.

At night the bar serves a full range of drinks including the  Russian beer, Baltika, on draught, as well as cocktails including absinthe mojitos. The drinks list is eclectic, traceable and independent. It takes its inspiration from Austria and Portugal for wine and offers reputable house spirits such as Broker’s Gin, Pikesville Straight Rye whisky and Doorly’s Five Year Old Rum.

The design of Concrete echoes The Hayward’s striking 1960s architecture. The gallery’s extensive use of concrete both inside and outside is visible in the cafe interior, which has been stripped back to expose the original concrete walls and services. The fixtures and furnishings provide an informal and relaxed feel to the space. Concrete displays works of contemporary art, and a concrete-mixer outlined by fluorescent pink strip lighting, created by artist David Batchelor, is displayed outside the cafe. A rotating programme of contemporary video works, curated by Ralph Rugoff, Director of The Hayward, are also screened.

Concrete has been created by, and is operated by, Company of Cooks, in consultation with The Hayward.
